Forced Air Oil Heating

What are my options with this current system? What is the most economical and practical way to upgrade a 4 story, 3-family brownstone and switch to gas. Suggestions? general costs with your suggestion?

You could change now to a gas boiler and run the water through an air handler thus keeping the hot air system.  Then, you would have the option of adding hydronic loops down the road and phasing out the hot air, without needing to change your heat source again.

I have gas fired forced air, and I’m no fan. I’d much rather have a hydronic system, hot water radiators or better yet radiant floor heating. Gas is much cheaper per unit of heat than oil, so I think the economical and practical thing to do is to get a gas furnace. It will probably cost  between $6 & $10k. If you were doing major renovations it would make sense to get a hydronic system, but with the installation from scratch of piping and radiators in addition to the boilier installation, that’s probably well over $20k. Check with National grid to see if there are any rebate programs to subsidize the cost of the furnace. A couple of places that have been recommended here before: All HVAC 718-833-0148 Aladdin Plumbing – 718-768-6367 (Ask for Mike, formerly of NATCO which merged with Aladdin)
