Burnham steam heater - Water issue

Attempted to turn on my heating system last night. I drained some water out of the system and then added water back in (believe it is an automatic water system). It appeared that the furnace turned on and then water gushed out of the boiler system. Water also leaked out of the nearest radiators. About to call a plumber to take a look but was hoping to get some feedback as I am fearing the worst. Thanks in advance for the help.

drain the water down to midway in the gauge glass, first making sure that the valves above and below the glass are fully open. Shut the water supply valve to the water feed off. Try firing up the boiler, and as MP said, it looks as though your suto water feed is at fault

Should I attempt to drain some water out (looking at the water gauge) and try turning the heater on once more?

Your boiler is flooded. There is no reason to “fear the worst”. Let a decent plumber, one who is legitimately knowledgeable about boilers and heating, come and have a look and set the proper water level and show you how to do it while he’s there.
