For the past 12 years we also have had a service plan with National Grid/Homeserve but am not satisfied for the following reasons (some of which have already been mentioned) and have decided to get a service contract for my heating system (steam single pipe) with my current plumber: 1)  in an emergency Homeserve does not come within a reasonable time (I’ve had to wait at a minimum 3 days before they could send someone over) and end up paying out of pocket for my plumber to do the work. 2) I’ve found that the service technicians that they send over are not very knowledgable, nor do they take the time to examine the problem or explain what the issues could be 3) To fix one faulty pilot light it took them 5 service calls before they sent over someone with experience who finally fixed it.  This is after much pleading and alot of time taken from work before they finally sent a competent technician (whose name and number I took so that I can work directly with him but this is not an optimal solution) 4) Homeserve only services the boiler and not any of the connecting pipes and this month we had a pressure noise issue with one of the pipes connecting to the boiler and since this is not covered by the Homeserve service agreement we had to call our regular plumber which cost us over $400\.   Bottom line, I would rather deal with my regular plumber who is extremely well-versed with our system, and is reasonable with appointment wait times.  Also, I don’t want to deal with various technicians who I don’t know, I would rather deal with the same person who I trust and know will do a competent job of servicing the boiler before the heating season begins and can properly service it as issues arise.

thanks everyone. i will choose not to renew. they seem a little shady, the day after i got the notice in the mail about renewal, they tried to charge my credit card (without contacting me). luckily the card was not working!

agreed.  not worth it.  my boiler stopped working last winter and they couldn’t come out for several days to remedy the issue.  with small kids at home we had to call someone who could come out immediately…for nearly 300 bucks.  cancelled membership soon thereafter.  it was pretty pointless

not worth it- they can’t come in an emergency. You have to call so far in advance to have them do the yearly check.

We left them after they couldn’t find a leak in our air conditioning unit.  This was like six visits and we finally gave up and called someone else who managed to diagnose and fix it.  Not recommended.

I have the heating and cooling plan and IMO you get what you pay for.  They’re a lot cheaper than the local HVAC service plan companies but their techs are not as good.  I’m going to switch my heating plan to someone else b/c I think my system is too complicated for them and they won’t touch anything that is arguably an electrical issue.

I’ve had the service plan for years, originally with Brooklyn Union Gas and it’s successors and now with whatever company bought the business. I’ve used it a few ties when my furnace stopped working and response has been prompt and effective. One really annoying thing about the present company is that they keep trying (with mail and phone calls) to sell me ridiculous unnecessary insurance to cover my inside gas lines.
