anyone had a hydronic wood-pellet oven installed ?
Although there is a small tax incentive for wood-pellet ovens in NY, it seems they’re not installed at all in Brooklyn. One indicator is that I couldn’t find a company that does bulk wood-pellet delivery. I’d be interested if anyone has experience with this topic, especially whole house hydronic wood fired boilers. if you’re wondering what I am talking about: Wood pellet ovens are fed by small wooden bits. These can be pumped from the delivery truck into a storage bin, and are fed automatically into the burner. The system is fully automatic.

@eman134 these are 100% up to code and burn cleaner than an average oil furnace. @deancollins there are different models that burn wood chips or are suitable for a combination of 2 different fuels e.g. wood chips and pellets or firewood and pellets. As long as there is no infrastructure for fuel delivery, it’s definitely more expensive than a traditional approach. Otherwise wood is cheaper than gas or oil. I like the idea, it’s off grid, local and sustainable.

I really doubt that these meet NYC code, since wood-burning fireplaces are no longer approved

do they leave any ash to be removed or does the pellet burn in its entirety? I’ve just googled some it seems they have an auger that drops them pellets into the burn chamber on demand. Wonderif it could just be done on wood chips (eg if you had farm you could chip yourself) or if there is something special about the pellets and compression etc.

surely 8 cubic yards = 2 yds x 2 yds x 2yds, which means 6′ x 6′ x 6′. Still big, but not impossible in a cellar, say?

These wood pellet heaters are quite popular in rural areas and are appealing because they use a renewable energy source, but I wonder if they’re economically practicable here where the cost of pellets is likely to be much higher, you’d have to have them installed and serviced by far distant technicians, and, unlike rural areas, natural gas is a relatively low-cost alternative.

outdoor weatherproof = indoor 😉 either way, 24′ x 24′ x 24′ = 8 cubic yards = a lot of space for NYC. Deblasio has nothing to do with state tax incentives. He also is against anything that would threaten feeding the insatiable union monster. I pay $400 for 2 full cords (minimum), mixed hard wood, delivered (dumped) to Brooklyn. Thanks for the link

I think they can be stored outdoors also, but you’d need to build a weatherproof housing and a pipe into your cellar. You’d probably need around 4 tons of pellets which is equivalent to 530 gallons oil. To store 4 tons you need 8 cubic yards of space… I doubt that Deblasio has anything against it. Since last month you even get $1500 in tax credits if you install a low emission wood pellet oven and discard an older wood burning stove instead: http://www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Programs/Programs/Renewable-Heat-NY/Residential-Wood-Pellet-Stove Problem is: nobody installs these in NYC. Here is a link to a (very nice) combined wood/pellet burner: http://www.froeling.com/us/products/kombikessel/sp-dual.html Btw – how much do you pay for a cord of wood?

Dont’t let deblazio get wind of it…. he will outlaw it unless it’s union installed – manufactured and delivered, or deem it environmentally dangerous. As someone who burns wood, I am interested. Finding someone to deliver reasonably priced hardwood by the full cord to Brooklyn was a challenge. I buy enough for friends and neighbors who also burn wood. That got them to come to brooklyn. Problem I see is storage. Pellets need to be stored indoors. Not sure if one delivery could last the whole winter. Do you have a data on burn rates/quantities or links to this type of heating system?
