Any harm to system from clanging steam pipes?
I know they are annoying and loud, but is there any harm or damage that can be done or even loss of efficiency that can result when the steamp pipes are banging and making all that noise? It only happens a few times a day for a few minutes. Thanks for any advice!

The pipe banging should only be heard when the system turns on, after a couple of minutes it should go away. This banging is from the pressure caused by the new hot steam entering cold pipes with cold water vapor. If the banging happens after that initial startup, there coupld be a bigger issue.

Take heart, the situation can and should be remedied.

It’s the sound of steam that your boiler produced being instantly turned back into water, so yeah, it’s the sound of inefficiency. The banging is as physically forceful as it sounds, and yes, it can pull pipes apart and loosen pipes from their hangers putting additional stress on the boiler and other parts of the system. It’s not something to ignore for long.
