underfloor heating in a bathroom

Did anyone watch “This old house” tonight? Lol I’m getting stick from the wife….they showed how to do radiant floor heating in the bathroom and even heated the walls of the shower and in shower seat. ….having just finished a master bathroom renovation where she wanted underfloor heating but our GC convinced us not to…..ouch.

I’ve done entire 3 and 4-story homes with preformed RFH boards. They make the installation idiot resistant.

@Slopefarm, we have a 3ft baseboard heater in the bathroom and its “ok” at heating up the room (about 10 x 8) but we have pretty high ceilings in our bathroom so its just passible. The reason for wanting to heat the shower is that its 3.5 x 8 (eg outside of the bathroom measurements above) and when you are in there its a little on the chilly side as there is a floor to ceiling glass door which prevents the heat from going into the shower. Like I said its totally fine…..but in hind sight…. really wish we put in hyrdronic under floor heating. Very much a “1st world problem” but like I said if you saw the This Old House episode….looked like its easier to do than it used to be using these new preform boards and was curious if people saw the episode or had experience using this type of system for hot water heating?

Ive installed hydronic and the electric radiant. I dont talk people out of Green features, I try and talk the into Green features. I suggest to you that he was uncomfortable with the technology.

Is your bathroom cold, or is the issue just a cold floor for bare feet? As nice as it is to step onto a warm floor in winter, the purpose of radiant floor heating is to add warmth to the room (and I really don’t get heated shower walls, as that would heat a confined space that is warm whenever you are in it anyway). During our reno, we put in electric radiant heat in our bathrooms because there is no heat and the bathrooms are on an external wall. But if the only problem is cold feet, you can solve that with washable rugs and bathmats. No need to go tearing up the tile to put in radiant heat. You could also install an overhead heat lamp — perhaps Mrs. deanbh would settle for that.
