Trying to decide if we should get air conditioning for our row house. Thinking about buying a mini split system, but we don?t know that much about how they work. Do we need a unit in every room? Where does the piping go? Can the compressor be on the roof or in the back yard? How much does a system cost vs. central a/c?

Do we need a unit in every room? pretty much, yes. Where does the piping go? when i did mine we just ran the piping along the ceiling and made a small soffit to hide it. Can the compressor be on the roof or in the back yard? if on the roof must be masonry house with compressor mounted on steel that rests on the side walls. How much does a system cost vs. central a/c? much less less than central A/C. i did a 1300 sqft condo for about 5k.

I also had mini splits installed. 4 units ran 7.5k with installation. got 1.5k back in tax rebate. not sure if the rebates are still around. one reason i chose mini splits over central air is that central air would involve going through closets and loosing closet space (as well as being a messy job) 4 units were: 2x 9000 BTU fredrich 2x 12,000 BTU fredrich had them for a little over a year now. very happy.

Is there a maximum distance from the compressor to the wall units? Can they go 50 feet, from the yard to the front parlor?

If it’s an option, people should consider a UNICO mini duct high velocity system, similar to central air. I had one done in PA and really love it. Because of the cmall duct size (8″ and flexible) they are much easier retrofitted and take up less space. You just need to find a licensed UNICO installer. But they will be a lot more exoensive than splits. Mine was $16,000 a few years ago. It’s more about the number of ducts. Mine was 14 in three bedrooms a large kitchen area and LR and 3 full baths but I also had a full attic to work with which made things a lot easier. About a 1,600 sq ft house

Minisplits are wonderful if you don’t mind the look of the indoor units. Personally, I’d build a suitable wood cover for the indoor units. They’re totally quiet. Length of pipe is typically restricted to 50′ from compressor. And you have the drainage to consider. Problem is that install costs are very high around here (compared to other places)…you can buy a 4-unit 3-ton unit (typically good for a duplex) for about $4000 but the installed cost as above. Called highway robbery. I bought a Freidrich 1-ton Breeze unit, touted as DIY (main advantage: no outdoor power line needed) for %1600 but had it installed by a professional for $1000\. It’s a single unit & works on my parlor floor beautifully with a concealed ducted fan which moves air from back to front. I cannot, however, use same on bedroom floors.
