I tend to prefer shops/people that can price according to clients’ needs, and their needs on one project may differ from another. For example, I originally tried to hire a project-based architect and it went sour – fast. She was percentage of construction and I needed someone who didn’t get frustrated after her first 3 drawings didn’t work for me. She figured on x drawings and we would fine-tune, but when I didn’t like the drawings, hmm. Ultimately I hired an hourly architect and he took his time, did more hand-holding and we found something that worked. But that didn’t work in the end either because we blew through a typical project based budget before we got to contract administration or kitchen design (this was a deck/kitchen reno which involved adding a kitchen back where one ahd been removed decades earlier, restoring a brownstone to a better layout). And to have enough to pay the contractor I have had to do my own admin – it’s been really stressful. So I wouldn’t go hourly again without some kind of cap. I also found the architect spent time on things (and billed for things) I hadn’t asked for, and a cap would avoid that type of thing. For context, I’ve paid the hourly architect in the neighborhood of $13K and expect to end up around $14K, on a job that’s in the $100K range, and before we parted ways the project based architect incurred $2000 in her time, but since she wasn’t willing to convert to hourly at my suggestion and get paid for her time, and had no deliverables, we split the difference – I paid her $1000 for her time/no deliverables, and she didn’t get her full value, so both of us parted not-thrilled but we could both live with the way we left it. The second architect has been great in some ways, not in others. Problem with hourly is people tend to hold back on getting the help they need when fees mount. I did. As for a designer, since we ran out of money on the architect, I ended up hiring a kitchen designer who wanted to charge a project based fee. Since our budget for any kind of additional help was so tight, I was very appreciative that she was willing to work with me hourly. In the end I probably spent $2500 on her, rather than the $8500 she proposed – I paid less and got less but it kept me saner. She was well worth the expense and I wish I had more funds in reserve to get more help from her on a fixed-fee basis. If I were doing this again I’d probably want to hire an architect or designer who acted as project manager. It’s just too hard for a novice to manage. Typical rookie mistake thinking it won’t be that hard

We are currently working with an Interior Designer on our apartment makeover. Her rate is $175/hr. She quoted us a flat fee for the entire project, but the contract does state that the fee is based on the estimated # of hours at a rate of $175/hour. For the photorealistic renderings alone, she’s been well worth the money so far 🙂

We typically structure our fee based on the needs of project and the comfort level of the client. If it is a small project with less defined goals, then an hourly rate is appropriate. If it is a larger project that has a clearly defined program, a flat fee or percentage is a better fit.

Maybe slightly high. We prefer to set a fixed fee and scope for the project. We find that it creates a better relationship as both the client and our firm are on the same page as far as expectations. I have seen too many soured relationships between designers and clients when working off an hourly rate. http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/curated

That sounds high to me.  I used someone who is $150/hour and usually works with a colleague who also is $150/hour so sometimes their combined rate is $300/hour but you get two of them, other times I just deal with her at a lower rate.  She was willing to do a fixed price of $8500 for kitchen design soup to nuts but I stuck with hourly since our budget is tight and we also have an architect.

Rates vary according to education and experience and whether they have a shop with overhead that needs to be supported.  Many do not charge an hourly rate at all.  Instead their compensation comes from the markup between their wholesale sources for products and the retail at which they sell it to you.  If you anticipate not making many purchases for your home, then often an hour or two of their services can be done for a set fee.  Such as a 4 hour consultation for $1000\.  If piecemeal assistance is needed after the initial consultation (such as you want their opinion of the sofa that you are considering) then often times they will negotiate with you for a reduced rate from the initial consult rate. $375 is a tad high, but not out of the realm for the area.  A lot of whether or not it’s appropriate for your situation depends on many of the other factors that I stated.
