Heating Contractor with Runtal Radiator knowledge needed

We just moved to a home with runtal radiators and a large extension. The extension is about 10 degrees colder than the rest of the house. We changed thermostat to the Ecobee so we can have another thermometer in the problem room and have sealed the sliding doors but we are still dealing with lots of cold. Beyond other construction issues (which we are sure there are) we are concerned that the system is over run. It is our understanding our system is in a series loop and that should have only 7 radiators in one zone, we have many more than that. Runtal suggested a heating contractor come, so I would appreciate any recommendations. We are located in Williamsburg. Thanks

30,000 BTUs is a safe number for sending hot water back to the boiler in a standard piping system to prevent condensation from building on a cast iron boiler, but it’s not always necessary. All good. There are often ways to split an existing over-extended or over-radiated loop into two parallel loops….I’m sure you’ve got options. I consult on things like this all the time: www.72fLLC.com

Thank you Master Plvmber. When I called Runtal they said 7 radiators or 30,000 BTUs. I will check what we have (or ask the plumber who did the work). My concern is they installed all 12 radiators on our ground level into one zone loop system (not sure of the right terminology)

“7 radiators” is a random number. Series loop systems are easy to deal with. You basically get about 40,000 BTUs deliverable in a ¾” piping zone at roughly 5 gallons per minute/4 feet per second of fluid flow. Assuming a typical run of piping in a residential setting resists flow at a value of around 8 feet of head, you’v got to make sure your pump can handle the demand of the loop. Of the two standard pumps often seen in the field, the Taco model 007 can handle the flow whereas the B&G Series 100 cannot.

Then again, you’ve probably got envelope issues with your extension. Everyone in Brooklyn does.

yes we are afraid of that as well! But the heaters in that room don’t get hot, they work, they get warm if we pump the temp to 74, but any other amount and they are cold to the touch. So we think its one of many issues. The joys of homeownership!

Extensions are notoriously cold and difficult to heat. There is probably no issue with the heating system. Most likely the extension is not insulated.
