Freon charges
So as of now, what would be the average price per pound of R-22 if I needed freon in my A/C system? I understand it’s being phased out so I wanted to get a general idea of what kind of costs I’d be looking at.

This is how we charge for refrigerant, other companies charge different rates. We are more interested keeping a customer for life, resolve there issue, instead of hitting them with a thousand dollar bill for refrigerant that may not last the season. Like i posted before loss of refrigerant is one of the problems, the system loses oil which is not replaced with the new refrigerant eventually the compressor fails etc. We service most of NYC and have very good results with the way we handle refrigerant leaks.

I was quoted at $135 for each pound. This would be the first time I’ve heard of charging less for additional pounds of freon.

anywhere from $150-$200 for the first pound. additional pounds can run $25 to $75. Amount of refrigerant needed will be determined by technician and a refrigerant scale. Make sure they use a scale. This is not normal to add refrigerant every year, there is a leak somewhere which should be located and repaired. Loss of refrigerant can lead to compressor failure because the system loses oil when the refrigerant leaks.
