You know, we’ve recently purchased a new ductless system from https://comfortside.com/ website. My hubby managed to install it by himself. It came with everything he needed for installation. Maybe, you’ll be able to install it under your own steam too?

castafiore: You can goggle Freidrich Breeze, comes in 12kbtu (115v), $1750, and 24k (220v). There only 1 inside unit, its main disadvantage. The inside unit has a power cord and for the 12k unit you just plug it into a regular outlet (it uses only 10amps). The pipes are fixed length 25’and cannot be shortened, and there’s a locking connector which clamps to the outside unit, so there’s no vacuuming & charging. Supposedly you can even move it later. The outside unit is like all others, and can be wall or ground mounted. Requires either a 3″ hole in the wall or can be snaked out through a window adapter (but that looks ugly.)
Third year now & works great, totally silent.I use a fan in parlor floor to distribute air as the unit is in the kitchen/dining area.

I was going to install myself, but was dissuaded by partner, who has a better understanding of my ability. So I got a moonlighting tech who did the whole thing in 3-4 hours, including wall mount.

@CMU, do tell more about this Freidrich Breeze, sounds attractive, as I do not have to funds to deal with permits and messing with electrical upgradres…
Spoke to a few split DX vendors and one quoted about $12,000 for equipment, installation and electrical upgrades…

Might be tough to find an HVAC tech to install something they are not familiar with. You can probably get a Fujitsu unit for a little more than that.

I may have been lucky. I got a Freidrich Breeze (supposedly DIY unit that does not require a permit) installed by a tech from an a/c firm (known to a friend). It cost $900, though, for 4 hours work and $200 in parts.

The Breeze is “DIY” because there’s no vacuum purge & charge involved (you cannot shorten or extend the precharged pipe), and no outside power (you plug it into an inside 110 socket.)

That said, getting someone to install one will be nearly impossible as any reputable HVAC guy will want to install what he knows and what he can sell you and it won’t be $900. I’ve rewired an entire house myself but I don’t know if I would attempt installing one of these myself.
