condensers on the roof - Crane cost estimate and recommendation
Does anyone know what we can expect to pay for a crane to get 3 condensers on the roof and have someone they can recommend to do it? Would you bother getting a permit or just do it at 4-5am for 20-30 mins and call it a day?

We had some work done that required a bucket truck and I’m pretty sure they had to pull a permit (the company with the truck did it and said it was easy) and I think they planned to arrive during alt side parking to ensure they got a spot close enough to the house.

As a mechanical contractor I have put a good many pieces of equipment on a good many roofs. I can say unequivocally that your idea is very, very bad. You will never get a crane operator to do what you are asking. It won’t happen. As a matter of fact I am even wondering if this is a serious post. Rigging cost vary widely and are dependent on pick location, equipment weight, and equipment final location. The rigger will take care of any permits required. If you are picking from the street, permits are absolutely required. For a typical brownstone you can expect to pay from $3000 on up. Why isn’t your mechanical contractor handling this?

A small crane, less than 135 ft and 3 tons, does not require a permit. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/streetworks/html/chapter_3/3_3_3.shtml

Whenever I have bought more than one for the same building; the company I bought them from includes this in the delivery. Not much extra for delivery and certainly makes it quicker & easier than working it out for yourself.

No worries… I appreciate the feedback, thats why I asked. Ill look to get the permit. Hopefully it doesn’t take a year and a day to get. If any of you know of anyone who does this, please let me know. Thanks again

Doing it in the dark sounds like a horrible idea. Surely no reputable contractor would agree to it. But if you prefer to hire cowboys who could drop the condensers through your roof (or better yet, through your neighbor’s roof) then a middle-of-the night operation sounds great. Sorry to be catty — just trying to make the point that this is a potentially disastrous approach.

Be a good neighbor. Get a permit.

I used Pedowitz Machinery Movers to move my woodworking machinery and they did it with surgical precision. You can call them at 718-923-1862\.
