Baseboard heating

We are in the middle of a gut renovation of a 2 family and we are converting the heating from steam to hot water. I stead of using regular radiators we were suggested to use baseboard heaters. Now that the job is progressing they are telling us that we will basically need these baseboards all along the side of the building, on both floors!!! This means we won’t have any wall space for furniture….is this normal or is the contractor overestimating the amount of heat we will need??

google “governale” baseboard radiators, we installed these as love how they hold the heat for so long (its basically a lump of cast iron), we don’t have lounges “pressed hard” against them but have furniture running against the walls etc. Probably too late now but the other option is underfloor heating…..

I have not look at you home lay out but i can told you that your contractor has no clue about baseboard heatting, you do not need yo run baseboard heating all around the rooms. Usually you do the outside walls on an L and maybe opposite wall depending on the size of the room

…and that’s because the Runtals heat with radiant energy in addition to convection. Just like radiators. Unlike standard baseboard heaters.

Runtal radiators are high quality and popular in the UK where they take their central heating very seriously! They come in many sizes and shapes, including vertical — which could possibly solve your wall space issue. But their version of a baseboard is much more like a conventional radiator that normal baseboards.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Does anyone have any experience with RUNTAL units and do you know if by using these we would be able to use lees units on the wall? I hear that they are more powerful than traditional baseboards…

“is this normal or is the contractor overestimating the amount of heat we will need??” Ask yourself, is contractor estimating this job to make result better for you or easier for himself? IMHO, baseboard heating is an expensive decision you’ll always regret. Same for conversion from steam to hot water. Use a licensed plumber, not your contractor, for your heating work.

There are Different types of baseboards, some are pretty good. But lenght of the elements must be calculated and depends on how much heat structure loses in worst case scenario. There also limitations of how long baseboards could be. In general, installation of baseboards can be done and comfort will be achived if installed properly. Good baseboards are pretty expensive and not sold at Home Depot.

Yes, baseboard heat is much more expensive to run. I agree they are unattractive. It is possible to re-use your existing steam radiators, though perhaps not optimal. Master Plumber could advise.

Having lived in homes with baseboard heating and “regular radiators,” I much prefer the regular kind. In my opinion, baseboard heaters are unsightly and take up a lot of wall space. Sure, you could put your couch in front of it but it’s not optimal for heat distribution. Plus the covers tend to get banged up over the years and fall off. +1 for the good old fashioned radiators.

First, no one can answer that question without seeing your plans. That said, it seems like a way of installing baseboard heat to accommodate an easy piping layout rather than piping the building to meet the heating requirements. And while we’re at it, baseboard heaters (assuming you mean the copper tube/aluminum fin type and not the cast iron type) is far inferior to “regular radiators” which give the consistent benefit of radiant heat that is non-existent with baseboard heaters. And you’re right, radiators take up far less wall space. The only benefit to fin-tube baseboard is a slightly lower initial cost.
