Worth it to install water line for fridge water/ice maker in rental?

Renovating a higher quality rental unit and trying to figure out if it’s worth it to add a new water line to supply the fridge for a water dispenser and ice maker. Plumber wants $350. It seems like most fridges nowadays come with the dispenser and ice maker.
I just don’t know if at a certain quality of rental apartment, this would be expected or seen as a noticeable amenity.
Any thoughts? Thanks all.

i am sorry, i could be repeating something here as i am not reading the other responses as my mind was made up when i first saw the post. my thought:

my parents house had an automatic ice maker and all of my youth and to this day i think that that was the weakest link in the plumbing system. i still think that. i would not bother. i do not trust the clear plastic lines and if it is a copper line and someone moves that fridge to much and kinks it, one more move and it is done. to this day, i do not have an ice maker in my house and will not and i can deal with the broken line myself if it happens.

Yes absolutely worth it, it’s basically been standard on all our jobs for a while now.
Run a copper line to a recessed valve box in the wall behind the refrigerator, then braided stainless line to the refrigerator.
Most if not all ice and water refrigerators now have integral water filters that are easy to change.

Only use copper line. Mice will chew through a plastic one. And don’t use a “saddle valve.” Use a real valve with a proper turn off.

I like to always make a little more effort and go high. In general, the market is always moving towards nicer materials and amenities. An ice maker is hardly a luxury today. For my tenant’s apartment I didn’t think twice because I installed the ice maker and water connection myself for the cost of materials. But $350 is probably worth it. I’d rather have a nicer apartment in the house and have better tenants and higher rent as a result. By the way, I’ve had refrigerators with ice makers in my own kitchen in various places for the last 15 years and have not had one break yet.

As a renter, the thing I care about the most (beyond the obvious basics) is having a washer in the unit (or laundry in the building). I’d be unlikely to rent an apartment without laundry. Dishwasher is a nice to have but I’ve never had one. Water in fridge — personally I prefer a more simple fridge but I’m probably an outlier. $350 seems like a very manageable cost however.

I rented a place with an ice maker in the fridge once, and left it turned off. I didn’t like hearing the sound of the ice dropping into the box, I could hear it from many rooms in the (rather large) condo – it was loud. (Maybe newer ones are quieter?)

I also wanted to make my ice with filtered water. Maybe ice makers use filtered water now, like those ones that dispense filtered water in the door – I don’t know – but this was an old side by side fridge, the old kind that last forever (unlike newer refrigerators you are lucky to get 12 years out of) – there was no water dispenser, and I’m guessing there was no filtering of the water used to make ice.

And I have often thought that the ice made by ice makers in all the fridges tasted bad – like it picked up odors from the food in the freezer. The ice in ice cube trays always tasted better to me. Though ice makers have possibly improved since I’ve tried them.

I do think a dishwasher is crucial in any rental, even really low end. Once I had one in a rental, I would never again rent (or buy) a place without one. (T hough maybe I’m just permanently emotionally scarred by all the fighting over the nightly dishwashing in my family as a child, before we got a dishwasher.)

Do the water line, usually the fridge is close enough to the sink to just install a dual valve, and either run 1/4 pex or stainless steel braided hose. I prefer those over cooper, just because they are more flexible, which makes it easier to pull the fridge in and out.

ONLY if this is a “top of the market” luxury rental with commensurate pricing. You’d have W/D, DW, ice maker – all the breakable mechanicals most LL’s have no desire to deal with. The ice maker would by far be the most prone to need service.

When I replaced the fridge in one of the rentals I manage I disconnected it and didn’t hook it up for the new fridge. One less thing to go wrong and have to repair in the future. Most people when coming to look at a rental don’t go “ooooo, an ice maker” and it doesn’t translate into a higher monthly rental number vs a dishwasher or laundry so I don’t see the advantage of spending the money on it. Just my opinon.

IMHO it’s just one more thing to go wrong in a rental especially if you’re not nearby, and i don’t think prospective renters expect it, unless higher end.

I thought having a tiny dishwasher plumbed for my rental unit (that I originally lived in) would be an awesome draw for tenant but in the end once I rented it, it was just a PITA and the tenants didn’t care that much. I would imagine they care even less about water dispenser in fridge.
