Where to find THAT archetypal Brooklyn window casing????

thanks Cate. You’re right about the handyman. They will probably not be as detail oriented. Got another quote this morning for $100 a linear foot for making the moulding and install. That seems steep but I have no idea what the going rate is – my molding is similar (in complexity) to the casing picture that was posted.

Hi there!

Do any Brownstoners know where to buy that archetypal Brooklyn window/door casing that you see everywhere – certainly in most of the neo-grecs I’ve seen. Attached is a photo. What makes it so distinctive is the prominent half-round (actually more than a half) moulding.

I’m looking for new. I need more than the few lengths that one of the salvage yards might have.

I’ve tried all the obvious places – Dykes, Kuiken Bros. and every online resource. I’m very handy and I’ve even tried to replicate it myself using off-the shelf and specially milled build-ups, but I just can’t get it quite perfect.

Any ideas where I can buy this stuff off the shelf?

just have a knife made at Adriatic. The knife wasn’t horribly expensive and it’s even cheaper if they have that knife already made – just a setup fee.

After that, the run was priced as if it were on the shelf.

yes this is a compound moulding as no-permitz said. having that information you could either reproduce or even surpass the detail you are seeking depending on your resolve. only limited to your imagination. best of luck, dork

Thanks dork and slopefarm. Compound mouldings is the way to go it seems. I’m also using the suggestions made earlier and getting one piece custom milled. The knife set-up prices were more reasonable than I expected.

Yes, time to do a cost-benefit analysis — I agree it looks like a compound moulding for sure — so now I would start thinking about how much time it would take to find the exact moulding for each of the 3 to 4 components (and I’m sure you know that there is a dizzying array of sizes/shapes out there, so plowing thru those will take time if you want exact), play around with the various assemblies to get it exact, and then actually put it together —

OR

get the knife made.

I would totally understand if one wants to do the latter and spend the time to assemble (I too, get picky about certain things and will obsess about certain details on other things for hours — just not this). But knowing just how much time it may take to put the thing together, just getting a knife made may be the less painful option.

Wow, that’s good to know. I just recreated something close using two pieces of stock from Dyke’s, and the price was probably around that per linear ft. I think I spent about 35 hours staring at Dyke’s stock collection, and more pouring over online catalogs.

I’d love to know if you were able to custom make your casing. A carpenter quoted me $50 a square foot to make and install similar casing and I was wondering if that was in the typical range. I’m trying to see if it would be more cost effective to to get it made at Adriatic and have a handyman install it

That deep curved piece is very beautiful and no longer made with that very deep curve (off the shelf). If Adriatic will charge you only for the knife and otherwise it’s the same price that’s great. A finish carpenter will do a very fine job installing this, and a handyman will not. I speak from experience.
