What should this mantel even look like?
I have – I think – a slate (possibly soapstone?) fireplace mantel that the previous owners kindly stripped. Thing is it looks horrible. Weird green splotches, gross brown color, dingy overall. Should this be faux marbleized? I really can’t picture what this thing should look like or how I can get it to look the way its supposed to. Does anyone still do faux marbleizing? And does anyone know how to properly spell it? Photos! Have to say I’m a complete amateur, but I think water closets were not uncommon from 1860s onwards, often preceding plumbed bathrooms. Came across a lot of online talk re mid-century Baltimore, Philly, NY WCs! Perhaps many got taken out as full bathrooms were put in. The experts will know a lot more about this sort of stuff. Interesting thought, higherwhitley. I guess I had assumed that these houses still used outhouses in the 1850s/60s (and early 70s)? I’m not sure why they would have gotten rid of it if so!

Could the coat closet have originally been a water closet (separate toilet)? We had a windowed closet next to the bathroom, & above the parlor floor, in our early 1870s wooden rowhouse. The window (covered over when we moved in) must have originally vented into the bathroom.

Your house is very beautiful. Congratulations. In the parlor, the plaster arch, the pocket door and the mantel all appear to be original and from the same era. They are also of the same era as the newel post and spindles/railing. Probably most likely ’60s but could be ’50s. I’d have to see more of the place (including the exterior and historic tax photo) to have a better sense of it. BTW twin houses built side by side (often sharing a party wall but detached on the other sides) are very typical of the circa ’50s Italianate period. The tile in the entry is later, circa turn of the last century. The decorative wall moldings in the parlor are later — possibly even the picture railing is later but I’m not sure. Also, of course, the width of the house is a sign of age. (As for the unusual layout, I’d love to know more. Sounds intriguing.) If you want, you can email me at cate (at) brownstoner.

Absolutely! I’m fascinated by this house. So much has been changed and stripped, I have really no idea what’s original. It’s a 25 foot wide woodframe. The parlor mantel is the only mantel in the house. Picture frame moldings everywhere along with the arch in the front parlor (I assume put in to replace a wall that was taken down in the pass-through) are lovely but I assume not period-appropriate. Newel post and pocket doors maybe? The weirdest thing about the house is that it was built with an adjoining house – and by adjoining I mean interior doors (painted over now) that link the houses together. They share water runoff and a waste line and a covered alley (now split in half for each house) that I presume was for the horse (this shared alleyway was on the 1862 map which is how I’m so sure they never tore down and rebuilt). I have never seen any other pair of houses like this. The other bizarre thing is the coat closet above the alleyway at the front of the house. Maybe it was another parlor-level passageway between the two houses? Glad you like the vases, excellent, ha! Agree maybe your mantel was never faux painted. (Those came later.) The shape of your mantel appears more Italianate in style (an earlier style, generally circa ’60s), though in slate rather than the more expected whiteish grayish marble. The slightly later (’70s, ’80s) Neo-Grec style included darker marble mantels, usually completely natural, in all different colors.

Wow, this is fascinating. The photo from tgvb looks exactly like what’s going on – I just thought it odd that its so inconsistent, could not have imagined it was the pattern of the stone. You can also put up some brightly colored accessories and and a painting over the mantel, and people’s eyes will be drawn to the bright color, not the color of the mantel. For example, ’60s vases from Bitossi in Italy in Rimini Blue (or any object in those colors) would look nice with this brown and the gray color of the wall. You can find them on eBay, Etsy, etc.

Originally these slate mantels were painted (with lead paint) in factories in Italy and shipped over in pieces, then assembled on site. The underlying slate can be all one color or different colors. Those splotches look like stray new paint to me, but I can’t really tell in a photo like you can in person. In any case, I appreciate the beauty of the natural stone. You can paint the summer cover shiny black or some other color, change the wall color, furnishings, wallpaper, what not, to make the mantel color less important. Also, any decrative paint artist should be able to apply a new faux marble finish of your choosing. I will post some examples soon.

That IS the way the stone is “supposed” to look. You have a slate fireplace, quarried from Vermont slate – it’s purple slate, and molted green & purple slate. The green splotches are part of the stone.

That works. I suspect that there are ways to improve the look of the slate—perhaps some sort of oil finish? Still, I think these were originally given a faux marble finish and that would look great.
