Water Filter - Sediment

GE makes several for under $100. All they do is take out large particulate – they don’t change the taste or chemistry or mineral content of the water.

Has anyone found the need to install a water filter due to sediment? We are finding rapid sediment build up in the faucet filter and our plumber recommended a whole house water filtration. Welcome any advice or experiences.

That’s very likely the cause of the sediment. Be sure to thoroughly clean the filter or change it completely and do the same before with any faucet has a small mesh nozzle at the end that catches sediment. You may have to do this several times as it’s very difficult to get rid of sediment from a filter or faucet. It may look like sediment keeps on moving through the system but it’s likely just the first sediment from when you put the water on after the plumbing work was done. When you have all the mesh covers off run the water for 5 minutes at full strength. It should run clear..

I’ve had a whole-house filter for over 30 years & am still using the same washing machine from that time. Filtering reduces wear & tear on any water use – ice maker, dishwasher, water heater, etc. You can get one for under $100 at HD or Lowe’s & installation is fairly easy. Changing the filter isn’t difficult & you can track the need for it by checking your water meter reading once a month.

Thanks mat and arkady. Arkady – Is there a model you recommend? I see pricing varies pretty dramatically depending on the unit and install requirements.

New York City drinking water is one of the highest rated in the country, and it always makes everyone assume that filters would therefore be useless but that is wrong. Filters can not only protect against visible sediment like the type you are experiencing but can also protect your fixtures against minerals and compounds.; even faucets and toilets can benefit from filters.
This all in addition to the obvious increase in taste to drinking water.

David is right; I would never recommend a whole house filter without first noticing an issue and then performing a Water Test to check. There are simple at-home tests you can order online usually free that can be a starting point for you
