Be very careful. With the eviction moratorium, it seems like the perfect environment for fraud. What do others think?

A friend of mine is apartment hunting & has found that several prospective places are asking for their financial info up front. Is that usual? When I rent the place I manage I don’t look at that until the potential renters have offered to sign a lease.

we are in a pandemic where many are unemployed and/or not paying rent. so…..

I am renting a unit right now and getting first emails (streeteasy) mentioning where they work, how they can cover 40x rent etc. I have not received one that did not preemptively offer this information – its as if they are reading my mind. But in reality I suppose these people know if they are creditworthy they will get whatever apt they want and can negotiate freely and agressively. I have had some that are asking for laughably significant concessions. Can’t say I blame them.

I’d bet the issue is the eviction moratorium. There’s no reason to rent to someone who’s a credit risk in this environment.

I haven’t seen/heard of things being done any differently than before. If the tenant is interested, they submit an application with docs, then landlord approves/denies.
