Trash & Recycling Bin Recommendations

We need to buy trash cans for our family and 2 sets of tenants. Wondering what brand and size we should buy? I assume we’ll just chain them and set out the bags to prevent theft. Any preference on Toter vs Brute. Where does one buy the chains? Thanks in advance

Everything worked out great. Wanted to report back. Bought Brute cans. We used a White Mean Streaks Marker and stencils from Target to write the numbers and street name on the can. We used larger numbers and smaller letters so the street name lined up under the numbers. The Mean Streaks marker was a bit goopy and hard to work with (no fine lines). If you like the crayon look it’s works well. My friend also recommended Uni- Posca markers which come in more colors. The hardware store also suggested Krylon Paint markers. We used 12″ plastic ties to secure the lids to the cans (2 loops for each can/lid). I think stainless steel ties may be more secure but hopefully people won’t steal those lids.

Thank you for all the thoughtful advice. It really helped. @rocketship thanks for the last post, I am happy that I got smaller bins. My husband is a bit of a minimalist so always likes to go small and not overdo it. I’m trying to figure out where to chain – probably on my stair railing as the neighbor on the other side has been a jerk so don’t want to chain to his stair even though my other neighbors have their bins chained to my stair.

We have the wheeled kind, with attached lids and our house numbers painted on them. Have never had a theft problem. The only issue with the wheelies is that the sani-men will not just dump them in the truck – they pull the bags out. This leaves a layer of small bags, poop bags and other junk at the bottom that you have to deal with eventually. If your garbage is in range of the street, people will put trash in them, so I would then recommend the smaller round cans.

I planned to chain the cans and put the bags out. I got the 44 and some 32s per the recommendation. If a bag fills up, will tie it and set it aside. Since we are supposed to compost there is less likelihood of rodents attacking the regular trash.

Spend $140 for something that you leave out on the street, not me! Druggies would grab them and sell them on the next block for a nickel bag.

Don’t buy anything until you see what the City has planned. Then again don’t buy anything! Use what you got until it dissolves into rust or plastic beads.

I assumed the suggestion to get larger bags was because trash can weigh down the bag and the sides can get pulled in. Having the larger bag will make it easier since it can be folded over the rim and less likely to get pulled into the can.

I live in the heart of bedstuy and have had these for over 5 years. They are not chained up and have our address painted on the side of them. They are super rugged and nowhere near in need of being replaced.

Those are huge bags. Why so big when the can isn’t that big? Next, the mint scented garbage can bags at Costco are advertised to keep vermin away and they seem to work. But we now put the cans out since people rip them up looking for ?? Lastly, cans DO get stolen. We’ve had cans AND lids stolen even with our street number clearly markered on. But anything and everything gets stolen on our street.

Raccoon on garbage crime hadn’t happened here yet. The only time I’ve had the garbage ransacked was by people looking for who knows what.

If you just put out bags instead of cans, there’s a much higher chance of raccoons and rats ripping them open and making a mess. At least on my block those are the only houses to seem to ever have that problem, and it happens often.

Thank you so much for the helpful answer. Did you get the one with wheels? I won’t be wheeling them other than to hose them down and clean but that would entail rolling them out to the back yard. So I am thinking wheeled is probably easier.

I have mine chained up now since one can and two lids got stolen.
Buy the chains same place as the cans, Lowes or home depot.
