Trash Bins--Good News!

Thanks for the good commentary. My wooden enclosures were over 10 years old and looking pretty beat so it wasnt unreasonable to replace them. LPC gave me a citation for them that comes with fines and penalties, so it wasn’t in my best interest to ignore it. The photo that was taken of my house at the time of land marking doesn’t have any trash enclosures in front at all. I feel like avoiding penalties, getting to have a trash enclosure and the one of my choice, is a nice win that I’m happy to share!

I had your standard wooden trash enclosures at my house and got dinged by Landmarks Preservation for it. They told me they had to go but I didn’t want bare cans in the front areaway–too easy for folks to rummage through and leave a mess; throw trash into the recycling; or create a fiesta for our local rat population. I asked to replace the wooden bins with the lovely, rat-proof MetroBox and was denied at first, but was able to successfully petition and was granted a permit for them to be installed. If anyone else wants details or assistance on doing the same, I’m happy to help. (NB: I don’t work for MetroBox in any capacity, I’m just a fan of long-term, beautiful solutions.)

So your (hopefully) nice wooden bins are replaced by the butt-ugly plastic Metro things and Landmarks approves? This is precisely why I hate the nit-pickiness of LM. I’d just havid said FO to them. I intend to do a whole bunch of changes before LM gets around to where I am, supposedly in a few years.

I’m not sure why the LPC has jurisdiction over free-standing trash bins. They’re not any more part of the building than the trash cans they enclose and Landmarks doesn’t regulate the kins of trash cans you can use.

Interesting. Now I’d actually be on board with mandating wooden trash can boxes ! But that would be a logical thing to do, unlike mandating inefficient double-hung windows.

I disagree; unlike windows (which IMO SHOULD be regulated), trash enclosures are portable yard furniture. Both wooden enclosures and the Metroboxes look good, but if the LPC has control over trash containers, why can’t they mandate authentic 19th Century type metal ash cans, instead of the plastic trash cans most of us use?

We wound up having to reduce the height of our wooden bins and paint them black (both to match the iron railing) and LPC finally approved. Of course, the new height doesn’t easily accommodate standard trash cans…

Landmarks logic is often illogical. They told me to dig into the brownstone to put up recessed lamps instead of just surface mounting them.
