Switching out exterior back door
We recently installed a Pella door in the back – full glass. And the contractor made a transom on site. Real simple 30×9. Lowe’s has Pella sales a few times a year. We waited until the sale and applied for a Lowe’s credit card at the same time. 15% off the door for the sale and another 10% for the first purchase with the card. The Pella transforms were way too expensive.

Currently there is a steel exterior door, home depot type with 3 lites at the top. I want to switch it out for a 12 lite exterior steel door. I also want to restore the transom. It is evident that there previously was a transom which may still be there for all I know. It is covered with some kind of metal filler, but you can see the pattern of the bricks around it.
I want to do this so that I get more light into the back part of the house.
Is it easier to replace the door panel only? Or should I get a pre hung door in the frame and replace the current door and frame?
Can I put in the transom later? Not having a lot of luck finding what I want in a door with a transom. It is looking like the transom will need to be created separately to go with the door. I am not looking for anything fancy – 3 horizontal lites. On the internet, it seems to go under the heading of “traditional” or “Colonial.”
We are in the process of doing a small renovation, and we would do the transom then. In the meantime, it would be nice to have a door that lets in more light.
I am ok with a Home Depot type door. The house is reno is clean and workmanlike, but not fancy.

I’d spend the money and get a custom door either with or without a transom for the full opening. Check out Anderson, Marvin or Pella. I don’t recommend Pella windows but their doors are much better quality.

Hi No-P, thanks for the advice. My architect recommended those brands as well. We want the transom, so we are going with it. But we are going to wait and do it with the small reno.
