Steel door catching.
That all makes sense. Thanks.

Calling all door installers for advice…
My steel garage door is catching slightly about 9 inches above the strike plate. I took off the top hinge and put it back up, after juggling the varied screws (installed before I moved in). I think it made a difference for a day, but it’s catching again. I think the screws are not pulling the top hinge tight enough to the frame. I think I can even see that. How can I fix this? Should I plug the top holes with anchors, in the hopes that the screws will pull in and hold more securely? TIA.

is the frame wood or steel?

A wood frame will expand and the door will get stuck. Since he said garage door, I assumed it wasn’t wood. Perhaps that’s an incorrect assumption…

The air has been very dry. 27% humidity in my basement garage/shop, so i doubt it is expansion. That happens with wood spring thru august.
The reason i wonder what it is is he says “varied” screws and questions using anchors. Screws in steel tend to be uniform machine screws.. i have seen many a plastic anchor in wood frames. Not my thing, but it is done.
I have thoughts on the steel frame. People damage and bend these and pop the hinge bracket out of the frames. I welded a mounting plate back in once.
Trying to get a sense.

I found once it’s expanded due to moisture then it doesn’t always contract.

Also might be a wood core steel door like the kind the orange apron men sell. Not a steel commercial door.

Hi – sorry – I wasn’t getting emails to notify me that there were responses. The frame is steel. I think the problem is that the top screw and perhaps others on the top hinge are not catching inside the frame. I suppose I’ll try to squeeze a plastic anchor into the hole and reinsert the screw.

Ok, ever see these doors in office building bathrooms and they dont work. Close all the way. Hit the top of the frame lock side. Think a moment. Weve all been in a building where this happens. That is because the cleaning staff put mop handles in the doors, on the hinge side, to hold them open and someone else pushes on them and either bends or snaps the hinge mount. Anything between the buck and edge of the door can do this.
If the screws are mixed as you said, perhaps someone stripped those. I am not sure anchors are what it needs. Drill it all the next size larger and tap it. A hardware store with brains can tell you what you need for that. Mazzone or someplace big like that. Dont ask anyone on an orange apron, they will not have a clue about taps, thread pitch, and machine screws. And drill sizes. You may also need to counter sink the hinge holes again.
