Steam riser removal question?

I see no problem. I would recommend terminating riser below the ceiling so it will not have a concealed cap.

We are renovating an ancient bathroom which has a steam riser running up smack in the middle of the room. The pipe extends into the ceiling and ends in the space just below the roof and there is an air vent just below the 3rd floor ceiling (see diagram).
The steam riser runs up from the main steam pipe in the basement through the bathroom on each floor but has no radiators attached currently, though there are some capped pipes where a radiator would have been connected many years ago. So for many years, it has just been the riser itself providing plenty of heat to the bathrooms since there are no radiators at all connected to the riser.
We plan to remove the riser from the top floor entirely and cut it back to still provide heat to the 1st and 2nd floor. The plan was to cut it back so that the top of the riser now ended in between the 2 and 3rd floors and there was an air vent near the top of the ceiling at 2nd floor, basically replicating the current setup just one floor lower (see proposed diagram).
Anyone see any issue with this proposed plan? (3rd floor wil l still be heated with electric). I don’t think our plumber really knows his steam heat so hoped to get a second opinion here.

Heating is a system, which means multiple points are interrelated and have effects on each other. Combine that with the investment being performed on a full Bathroom Renovation and my suggestion is to have a professional make a visual evaluation to make recommendations from there..

How many radiators are in the system…how many btus is the boiler? Judging by your sketch radiators have been removed previously….any banging , uneven heat problems? I doubt if clipping that riser is going to make a difference, but chances are that your boiler is oversized for the system. If it has not been giving you terrible problems previously it may have to be tweaked…contact any of the heating guys who post here… myself, chris petri, john at gateway, gennady at absolute mechanical
