steam heat

I have a steam heat boiler located in the front part of the cellar in a 2 family house; i recently had my thermostat replaced and we put the heat at 68 from 11 pm – 6 am; 72 all day; the heat does not heat up well on the 3rd floor apartment; any suggestions what to do

And just so you know, if you have gorton vents, you dont have to change the entire vent, you can unscrew and swap the orifices. So if you want to experiment before buying new vents, you can take a larger orifice off a vent in a room that is too hot and put it on a vent in a cold third floor room and put the smaller orifice in the hot room.

The orifices on the gorton vents are coded. And i suppose they are on the other brands as well. Go to the manufacturer’s website and look at what they say about placement. Generally, the largest vents or orifices, are furthest from the bolier or in the hardest to heat rooms. My local hardware store has a neat gorton chart explaining this.

If you begin swapping things, be sure the system is off.

Install larger vents on the third floor radiators.
