Sewer insurance success story

we subscribe to this program. i just looked at a water bill: it costs us 25.00 for the water line and 50.00 for the sewer line per billing period.

there are two stories on our street (sorry, let me restate that “on our block”) with regard to the program: one story was they declined to cover due to a prior damage report on file and the other was they declined due to tree roots.

$75 a billing period seems like a lot for this program and in spite of the stories about them finding their way out of covering damage, we continue to subscribe.

from the stories we hear about them declining to cover damages, perhaps we would be better taking the money to atlantic city and putting it on the craps table?

Like many others on here I’ve been on the fence about canceling the sewer insurance program as there’s plenty of horror stories about it not paying off when things actually go wrong.
Well, my neighbor a couple doors down had a sewer issue last week. He had a sewer guy come, they used a camera and turns out the pipe was fractured. They called insurance, they verified, then sent a repair service who did the work and the insurance program covered all of it—to the tune of $12,000 which seems exhorbitant, but they had multiple trucks, a half dozen workers and did it in a day. I’m impressed.
The caveat is that the work was done ony in the street from the main up to the sidewalk, so I don’t know if the insurance would have balked if the leak were closer to the house.
My neighbor also said he had intended to cancel the insurance and just hadn’t gotten around to it, so he’s feeling pretty lucky.

I didn’t even know about this type of insurance. Is this something that most home owners have in Brooklyn? Sounds like it was a good thing your neighbor had it, but do most have it? Has anyone not had it and had a high cost repair job?

This is the program: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/dep/pay-my-bills/service-line-protection-program.page and I think it’s safe to say it’s notorious. Like all insurance they look for ways to get out of paying, and so the list of reasons for non-coverage is extensive. If you look on these forums you’ll see lots of mentions of peopel paying, having an issue, and then not getting covered.
That city link says that a typical water line repair is $5k and sewer line is upwards of $10k and there are tons of people who get stuck paying that as most homeowners insurance doesn’t cover repairs beyond the piping inside the house.
