hey brownstoners:
thanks to Ellehouse, there is a bit of discussion going on about Historic On line Newspaper Indexes and images of the papers themselves and what a resource they are for researching an address. in case all are not aware or know what they are, the sandborn fire insurance maps are now on line. these century plus old maps list every building in communities around the country and i have used them to show such details as that my own g, g, g, grandfather lived in a two story wood house on Dekalb in the 1880’s. i also know that my great grandfather sold gasoline out of an underground storage tank from his store in Nassau County in the 1920’s and that my g,g grandparents lived in a tenement where the Port Authority Bus Terminal now stands in the 1870’s. here is the link to the Brooklyn Sanborn Maps:
