Hey there, new homeowner back with more questions!

I was putting in a new ceiling lamp and discovered cloth covered wires. Do I need to replace these? Is it possible to live in the home while this work is being done? Apparently all the bathrooms and the kitchen were rewired because those were renovated but some of the parlor floor, garden floor and top floor haven’t been renovated so those areas could potentially have cloth covered wires in them. Thanks everyone. I’m grateful to have this forum to turn to.

ok, now first, i am not an electrician. but we have these in our house and we had to change a lamp here and it was mounted on an old style junction box that had to be removed and all the wires in there separated and put on a new box. and guess what – i knew that all that cloth cover plastic was going to crumble like stale bread.

in short, you can live with those. they will not crumble until you mess with them and sometimes they are in better condition back in the wall and inside the armor than what you see in the box. our house is full of them. this is what we did: i had an electrician deal with our lamp situation. he removed the wires and then put heat shrink sleeves on the wires where the insulation broke off and reset all the wires in a new box. of course, i watched him do this and since then have used these on wires myself but if i had a really messy situation, i would consider bringing the electrician in again.

we plan on owning the house for another 5-10 years and have no plans on removing all of the cloth covered wire. i will tell you one ot her thing we do; whenever we do work in the house and open a wall, we pull wire; we did our bathroom and had to open the pipe chase and while these were open i pulled two extra cables (12/3 each= equals multiple circuits) up to the top of the house and left them coiled in the cock loft in case we ever need them, say to pull across the house and add a few circuits. the cables are coiled in the basement and labeled and if we sell the house before putting them into use, i will tell the buyer what they are.
