Hi, this post is on behalf of a friend who has lived in her building for several years without any major issues. Recently she has started to hear a grinding/whirring background noise that goes on for about twenty seconds, followed by thumps (starts quietly at 0:05 in the link below, and the thumps are around 0:26-27). The sequence is repeating itself several times an hour and dozens if not a hundred times a day. The sound is new this year. Landlord is unresponsive. Is this sound coming from below or above her? Best just knock on the door and explain the situation, hopefully they get to the bottom of it. Could be a rotating fan, and the thump is it stopping and going back the other way?

From above. They’ve talked to the people in the line above them but to no avail. Two floors up is a mostly-vacant corporate apartment, so it could be coming from there. It’s not constant like a fan – it goes on and off dozens of times during the day.
