Reco for Painting Radiators

Thank you everyone for your input. I love the idea of sandblasting down to the raw metal and then clear coating. As with everything in this process, it’s going to come down to pennies pinched, so we’ll see… thanks again all.

Undergoing a reno and we have all radiators disconnected from the system.

We’d like to get them painted anew and am looking for recommendations for someone who can do about 13-15 units.

Not much… this isn’t something you need to overthink, a regular painter can do it. If you’re already doing a “Reno” have it done as part of the painting process.

You can also have them sand blasted and painted at an auto body shop. I don’t think it’s very expensive; the difficult part is moving them.

Sandblasting and putting a clear coat finish is a nice option. Then you’ll never have to deal with peeling paint again. Depending on the size, it will run about $500 per radiator. So, not cheap! But it looks great.

Ever-Nu will do it and they pick up and deliver but they will not enter your home. You’ll need some strong guys to transport from home to truck and return. You may choose to sandblast the parlor floor radiators and then paint the upper floor ones.

I would consider back flushing them, possibly with a chemical. If they were hauled out to the street anyway, cobble together the fittings so you can attach a garden hose in the reverse direction of previous flow. You might be surprised at the amount of rust and flakes that exit. Only worrying about the exterior “look”, means introducing that gunk into your hopefully new, but maybe your present distribution system.

Depending on how much paint is on them, chipping and scrapping, then repainting is easy enough. Less expensive, and much easier than sending them out for sandblasting. You’ll get good results that way.

So then is the grey colored one just raw metal with a clear finish?

We had Ever Nu sandblast and repaint ours with a matte black finish a few years back but I wasn’t thrilled with the result … while the the powder coat will probably last a lifetime and Ever Nu did a great job,, the esthetic is sort of un-natural, like a plastic finish.
I might try the “unpainted but with a clear-coat” look next time.
