That article claims that the first recorded use of master bedroom was in 1926 by Sears, but I have absolutely seen the phrase used in advertisements well before that – but still in early 20th century.

I don’t know either. But the connotation, nevertheless. Especially in Southern states. It just seems like the benefit of dropping it far outweighs the the loss, which I’m at a loss to identify.

How about the now out of date usage of the word Master for a boy who was not yet old enough to be addressed as Mister? As in Master John Doe. Or how about the usage of the word to depict one’s learning of a skill or profession at a high level. He really mastered that technique.

I had never heard of that first one you listed. Interesting. Where/when was that? Regarding the latter, I’m pretty sure that terminology existed at least centuries before slavery in the US. Not sure there’s any connection. I’d say when/if a critical mass has a good case against it, then it’s worth a debate. Do you have examples of language we’ve done away with that wasn’t worth it?

workisfun No nothing comes to mind with anything else, It caught my eye though cause as a kid my Great Uncle had sent a Birthday card to me back in the early 60’s, and it was addressed as Master…. That led to the discussion of what it meant and that’s how I learned. Two of my great uncles were a Doctor and the other a Professor at Fordham as well as a Pharmacist. I’m OLD; I routinely got cards and things addressed to “Master Robert” when I was a kid. The meaning was innocuous then, but since it has a negative connotation now I’m glad that the usage is obsolete.
