I am wanting to redo my front porch for my brick rowhouse in Queens. Right now thIs 2nd floor porch is brick and chipping. I am interested in maybe some type of iron or metal porch railings instead. Would change the staircase railings to match too. Does anyone have any ideas/pictures to look at? I am feeling overwhelmed. Interested in recommendations for contractors too.

Recommend you look at neighbors and 1940 tax photo of your row in Queens to see what was there originally and try to restore or reproduce it. If it’s affordable, maintaining the original appearance of your home in good condition will best enhance its value. Once you figure out what you want to do, then you will know what kind of contractor you need. It also may be easier and cheaper to repair existing rather than replacing the whole thing. Google 1940 tax photo Queens to find the city website with the historic photos. Their search engine is a little weird and hard to use but if you type in the block number for the whole block you should be able to find it.

Good idea. I see that in 1940 there was an iron railing with decorative rounded brick pillars at the corners. Not sure I would add the decorative brick again but maybe. Now to find someone who can do that and also fix the brick on the side of the staircase. I suspect there needs to be some remediation because of leaking or rainwater getting through the brick.

Also have a tin awning that i would like to replace with something retractable if possible. No awning in 1940. Not sure if it’s worth it to replace but definitely want to remove the tin. It would probably have to be removed anyway if redoing the porch to add iron railings. The tin awning is currently connected to the brick porch.
