New Brownstoner Format

Why is everything so BIG? When I look at the news section the headline fills half the screen. I can only see half a picture at a time. Is anyone else suffering with the LARGE TYPE edition of Brownstoner? Why cant they just show all the links to off site stories instead of making me click “more news this way”? I tried to give myself time to get used to the new format but it is really much worse – takes much more time to see what’s there and when you scroll down the same stories repeat themselves. On my laptop the forum section doesn’t even load. Anybody else missing the old Brownstoner? Well, I’ve have to add another irritation. Just got to entering a comment on a thread and when I clicked Reply, it did nothing but come up with a Discussion Closed message.. On a new thread! Thanks for throwing away a long text.

Also, what is the purpose of the second text box below where you’re typing? As a website designer, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s confusing and unnecessary. And please use a text cursor instead of the non-standard Hand in the comment box!

Thanks, Andrew. I am glad you checked in. Two thoughts: 1. My point wasn’t about spam, it was about the way dead forum threads knock live ones off the first page, whether due to spam or a stray comment of little relevance to the OP. It undermines the degree to which the forum provides a service to the community if old threads keep knocking new ones off the page.

Second, I know you would like us to email you feedback. But nothing anyone said in this thread is news. It is the same stuff we have been grumbling about for months. there is no point in any of us emailing you again about it. Rather than shunt us off the web into separate silos of communication, I wish you would engage with us as the loyal community we are and have been for a looooong time, and engage with us as a community — i.e., group, not in isolation — about what you and we each think is working and is not. Why not have a constructive dialogue with the community about how you can serve it better consistent with your goals.

You will note that this thread was a mature discussion, without cursing, name-calling etc. Show us some trust and some love and we will reciprocate.

Well, this was a thread about format, but I agree about content. Not just that a smaller % are RE or home-related, but also that even the core RE content has gotten less interesting., on average (not counting MM’s posts, of course).

the biggest problem is content- look at today for example. a post about urgent care centers and biggie smalls. ummmm people come here to read about real estate and houses and quality of life issue to do with houses and housing etc.

not sure who’s big idea it was to fix brownstoner but sadly it is more broken than ever.

OK, I am spending too much time on this but i want to make a point. The thread “Ever sold your NYC home yourself, without a broker?” died on 2/29 with a lengthy thank you from the OP. Someone popped in two days ago with a short, contentless thank you, and now the thread is active and 11th on the current roster. There is even a note at the bottom indicating that discussion is closed. So what purpose does it serve to have this thread and others that have similarly long-ago completed serving their purpose bump more recent forum threads off the first page where the OP may have a current query and be hoping for more answers? I definitely visit the forum less than I used to because I am sick of perusing the same old threads over and over again, wasting my precious time-wasting time.

agree with everything above, and also I find it sad that they are slowly turning every post into some asinine “listicle”: Top 10 Listing, Top 5 Stories, Four Central Brooklyn Houses, etc etc etc

brownstoner used to be great because it was hyper focused, now it just feels watered down and more concerned with generating clicks than the content itself.

schmecky, I think you answered your own question. Why would a sponsor of a shady auction allow a comment thread on his ad? the question is more why sponsored content looks exactly like actual content.

I also used to use Afternoon Links as the marker for the last post of the day. Now Afternoon Links comes at like 2pm. And more follows. I liked it as a sign-off or wrap-up for the day.

I agree that the previous format was much better. I used to go to the site daily, but now find it too troublesome to check on a regular basis. I miss the previous listing of open houses and the status of previous featured houses. The old format of the forum was much better than the new.
