Hello, we just discovered these “growing hairlike objects” on our wall. And we are unsure if this could be some kind of mould or if this could be lint or even steel wool that is somehow magnetically attracted. It comes off without any stains and the individual “hairs” feel very sturdy. We did operate with steelwool on the ceiling above to close a hole from the pipes. Wondering if anyone has seem similar and give guidance. Here are some random thoughts that may be off the mark but perhaps could spark some other ideas.

I’m going to guess if it was steel wool you might have known it by touch, but perhaps not. Would have had to have been a coarse grade. The wiry nature does make it a likely suspect. Is it possible that the steel wool became conductive / static and attached to a wall screw? Perhaps. Attracted to magnetic current from an electric cable behind wall? maybe.

Otherwise a guess could be Phycomyces nitens etc. But on an interior wall with no moisture, food, etc it looks a bit out of place. Could there be moisture behind the wall? Is that an exterior wall? I’m a little skeptical to call it mold if it doesn’t grow back.

A final thought from looking at the photos….Is that bubbling under the paint… could the wall have had mold before and been covered up with paint? In which case a pre-existing condition that was never solved, but I don’t want to create alarm by suggesting – its just a low prob ability guess.

Personally If it doesn’t grow back I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over it. If it does, have the mold tested immediately and be prepared to open the wall up. I would personally keep checking for moisture in that corner through the winter and spring, and if it continues to be bone dry then I would default to the steel wool theory.
