Look for Eastlake Door Hardware
Well, the thing about posting a want ad to all members of the ADCA is that you’re not just speaking to pricey websites. Collectors and vendors alike sometimes buy box lots in order to get that one piece they really want….and then the pieces they didn’t necessarily want to acquire just sit. So you may be better off picking up singles here and there through an ad, rather than assuming you’ll be dealing only with professional vendors, and have to pay a fortune for a set. Also, I found that when I joined, and introduced myself as a newbie restoring a house, I got sympathy and appreciation from other members, as I was someone new who clearly respected the quality of original pieces…and that sympathy seemed to translate into good deals, particularly from individual collectors. Again, this was quite awhile ago. But it may be worth a shot.

Hi. Can anyone recommend a salvage yard or similar that sells Eastlake door knobs and hardware. I’m familiar with the online sites but would prefer to shop local if possible. I’ve tried the Big Reuse already -nothing there. Many thanks Jason

If you want to stay local, salvage places include Olde Good Things and Demolition Depot, but local places charge more prob because the rent is higher. If it’s just hardware you can order from anywhere unless you need to see it first. Lots of good places in Maine, Chicago, etc. Agree with no-permitz eBay is a good option. (Though beware the cobbled together nonsense that doesn’t actually fit, and just beware that some are reproductions — not that there is anything wrong with that, as long as you know.)

I have some here at my shop. actually drawers of stuff but none of it is inventoried and it is scattered (which means I will point to the shelf and the potential customer does the looking). mostly hinges, some trim plates (eustecheons?) and some knobs. I keep most of it for stock for my customers but will sell it if someone finds there way here when I am doing shop work (some days I am here all day).
also, I am working on retrofitting this stuff with new lock bodies. I have done a few and they have worked out. others not so well.

Hi guys. Thanks for recommendations which I will investigate. Online I have found Etsy (as well as eBay) to have the best selection.
Steve, getting this stuff on-line one day could really be worth your while. It’s amazing what price a pair of Eastlake knobs and roses go for !!!

If you don’t mind repro, Charleston Hardware. https://www.charlestonhardware.com/eastlake I agree with Cate on the cobbled together stuff – that’s always a risk on ebay and etsy.

I have ordered hinges from Charleston hardware. I think they spec the product and have it made someplace. it is all good product. very good product for price.
back to cobbling things together. very risky on ebay. you cannot find a full set of hinges without one being damaged. what I do is spend years cobbling this stuff together and make full sets out of broken sets. it takes years to find the matches though and I have been at it that long.

Btw, if anybody is looking for a budget option reproductions, I came across these which are half the price of the other repros:
The bright brass looks bad, but the oil rubbed bronze appears passable.

here is the problem with today’s brass and this is where I sometimes get push back with customers: most brass today is “yellow brass”; it has less copper in it. much of the brass pre 1920 appears to have been “red” brass; it has more copper. so today we buy these yellow brass things and they look “bad” or “cheap”. they look “new”.

great thread jason, thanks for posting. I don’t like the cheap look either but sometimes there are budget constraints and nice to have options. Though a slightly worn used option maybe better than a cheap repro. With ebay/etsy you run the risk of scratched and old stuff (pictures aren’t always accurate)… which can work depending on the rest of the hardware. It may be better to get a nice quality reproduction. England seems more advanced in terms of variety of nice repro hardware as well as cleaned up originals and those can be found on ebay.

Go to the Antique Doorknob Collectors of America website, at https://www.antiquedoorknobs.org/ . Join it. They publish books cataloging thousands of antique patterns (assigning code numbers to the patterns for thousands of knobs (with photos), and there are members who also collect hinges, doorbells, etc.), and their website etc. is read by a lot of professional vendors of antique hardware, as well as individual collectors. They have a facebook page, which I haven’t looked at. But when I bought my house back when, I had one original doorknob (it matched those on houses on either side of me). A local hardware store told me about ADCA, and I joined, looked up the catalog number of my doorknob, and posted a want ad for that number in the newsletter. It turned out that the pattern was relatively common, and I got quick responses from dealers and collectors all over the country. In no time I had more than enough doorknobs and matching keyhole covers to restore my entire house…and spares left over for my neighbors who needed a few. I grant you, that was quite awhile ago, and prices have definitely gone up, but having tapped into the mother lode at the time, I think I spent around $350 for the entire haul. Good luck.

Hey fiordiligi
Thanks very much that sounds like a great resource. I also have the same amount in my budget to spend …. here’s hoping. 🙂

Glad to help. If you really get into this stuff, you might want to take a trip to their next convention. I went to a couple of them, and the displays are really mind-blowing. The figural pieces command the highest prices, and the rarer bronzes manufactured by the Metallic Compression Casting Company (later Russell and Erwin) are works of art – some of the finest nineteenth century casting produced in the US. Some of these are still adorning institutional buildings in Bed Stuy and elsewhere.

If I needed a number of matching pieces I’d probably go with reproductions. Besides Van Dykes I think that House of Antique Hardware is good. I agree that lacquered bright brass looks cheap, but uncoated polished brass can be allowed to tarnish (AKA develop a patina).
