billy, you are correct. two men did 10 cheap vinyl windows in a day on my house. . this included capping the exterior. a friend of mine and his helper did it and i was the gopher and clean up guy. but these were cheap, light, and smallish vinyl windows. also, my friend was not on the hook if he scratched one or damaged something (it was move, move move). i once installed windows with a window contractor and i could have done this project over 3 days alone.

it gets a little different with expensive product. in addition to being larger and a little harder (riskier) to handle, they may be a bit more delicate and perhaps a little more temperamental to set correctly (i have never installed these high end windows, just mass market vinyl and aluminum). if a contractor is on the hook for the entire job, in addition to moving slower he will have to have something built into the job for the risk associated with handling something expensive (things can go wrong that are out of his or her control and when that happens he cannot go back the the customer and ask for m ore money). all companies do this, not just small contractors. all companies build money in for employee error. that may be why they charge so much to handle these.

fyi: someone called me a year ago and asked me to come adjust or repair some windows several stories up in lower manhattan. the job actually involved standing in open windows over the street. the people were willing to pay whatever i wanted (they might have gone well over $200 an hour). in this case, because of the risk to my well being, i told the customer “i would not do this for all the money in the world” (this is the truth). that is what risk does, it drives up costs.

That makes sense and I would agree with your comments. The pricing seems to range so there may be an installer who does it for less and not cheaply.

I received an estimate of 2k per window for installation only. It still seemed high awaiting more estimates.

We used Windows we are to replace most of the windows in our landmarked Park Slope brownstone. They were excellent–not one complaint. Efficient, nice, cleaned everything afterwards, figured out solutions to bizarre problems that arose. Highly recommend.
