We are looking to remove the interior double doors to the front parlor. (I know, I know. Just trust me that we’re not carpet-bombing our beloved house, that we cherish all its details, and that if you tried to sit down to dinner with us in that 7′-wide room, you’d want us to remove the doors too.)
So. Is anyone restoring houses in Brooklyn adding this kind of thing anymore? I see nothing but open plan blowouts on real estate and design blogs, so I don’t know if there’s any market for doors.
If someone were to want them, would they want or need the surrounding molding as well? Looking for opinions on this point especially.
These doors are simple and were painted long ago, but they’re in good condition in the sense of not being chewed up. Amusingly, it is not possible to get far enough away from them to take a full-length picture, so I’m attaching these two. (See above, re 7′-wide front room. Did I mention the house is 11′ wide?) Each is 30″ wide and about 104 ” at the top of the arch.
If there were big bucks in painted parlor doors, I’d be happy to pocket it, but realistically, I just want them to have a new home. [IMG_4064](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:VsAp:img_4064.jpg.jpg) [IMG_4065](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:tdvp:img_4065.jpg.jpg)

Those are some very nice parlor doors, and I WISH we could use them in our renovation to bring back some original details to a brownstone that was stripped to the plaster in the 20s/30s– but due to the CofO, the entrances all have to be fire-rated. Now, I did some research and haven’t spoken to the contractor yet, but I know that at least in the UK there are fire-rated clear varnishes that can be used on doors and then approved by a UK fire-rating council… but does anyone know if anything like that exists in NYC?
Now, I’ve heard that with doors it is generally helpful to have the original casing/framing as well, for fit– but I wouldn’t recommend that you remove the really nice wood trim from the doorway unless you were already planning to do that. Trust me, as someone who’s staring at a bunch of trim-less window openings, they look pretty… boring.
Anyway, I will check on a few things, as I’d love to find a way to make the doors work. What’s the rough decade of construction of your brownstone?

From the look of it, you have a circa 1860s Anglo-Italianate home with center staircase and low stoop. Options to consider: 1. Leave everything in place, including pocket doors (at the moment those look like hinged doors, but maybe because you already removed), use the space as a library/formal parlor or even combo kitchen/dining room if the parlor/living is in the rear, possibly add a window seat. 2. Make a very large opening to the hall but don’t remove all of the wall completely, make sure the opening is nicely finished. 3. We have seen one Anglo-Italianate whose stair hall was completely open originally. Google the listing for 47A Willow Street to see how they did it — arches with plaster brackets are key to making the space look finished, intentional and gracious.
