ISO Handyman Recommendation to Unhook Old Gas Range & Connect New One?

We have always used wonderful small companies where the master plumbers are on site supervising and even sometimes doing the work with one or two other employees. However, our beloved oil company of many years eventually merged with/sold to a bigger outfit (no doubt this is part of a larger trend happening all over NYC) and they do sometimes send out young solo boiler technicians who have inadvertently caused a number of issues.

Hi, I’m in Crown Heights. Does anyone have a reliable handyperson recommendation that could help me unhook a gas range and reconnect a new one? I would need them to come in the morning and come back later after the new stove is delivered or come back the next day. Thanks!!!!

Totally agree. Appears easy enough for a handy homeowner to do but as occupant of a four story brownstone with two rental tenants best way to go is to get licensed plumber not handy man to do it. If gas leaks or worse explosion you and your tenant would be at risk of harm and a certain lawsuit by a tenant.

never mind the lawsuit. there are three people sitting in jail right now because a building owner in NYC had two bozos do illegal gas work and a building blew up and killed someone. every time a building blows up, they do an investigation to see who did what and if someone can be held criminally liable.

I’d probably live dangerously and do it myself, but my late FIL, a plumber, showed be how to hook up a gas range >50 years ago. He put house paint on the gas pipe threads—that’s probably frowned on now.

I can make a gas joint, and I don’t trust a 23 y/o dude with a gas card to do it right. I’d probably end up remaking it myself anyway so I could feel safe. Believe me, by the time a plumber has been there 3 times, and I have the tools sitting right there, sometimes it’s time to just fix the job. But the OP clearly does not know anything about gas pipe. You can’t legally install a gas range in NYC unless a licensed plumber is signing off on the job.

In my opinion, this has killed people. Homeinspector mentions the case where the paperwork burden of minor gas work was so large that in a bizarre scheme, a licensed plumber was paid to pull permits for work done by totally incompetent idiots. The building exploded causing deaths and major property damage. I would argue that this remains the current model for plumbing work. A licensed plumber, who hasn’t touched a pipe in 10 years, signs off on work done by low skill employees at best, or frequently other people who have no idea what they’re doing. His job is not to plumb, but to stamp paperwork. And when he moves to Florida to retire, why not stamp a few more gas ranges installed by whoever.

A friend of mine, an engineer, commented on how he was unable to do his own gas lines in his home, and was seriously disturbed by the quality of work done by his plumbers, and honestly it was pretty poor. Was it dangerous? I mean it didn’t meet code and certainly wasn’t as safe as it should have been, but the inspector couldn’t tell the difference.
