Insurance Adjuster for Renovation Work Claim
Have you tried to file a claim with your carrier? Did you have a builders risk policy in place? A standard homeowners probably wouldn’t cover losses from a major renovation. Typically, public adjusters work more with property carriers from what I have seen. Also, as you stated, if the liability policy wasn’t active when the loss occurred, then I don’t think the liability carrier will be obligated to pay. If the contractor is still in business, I think you should contact an attorney and proceed with legal action. You may be able to put a lien on the company.
If you want to try the public adjuster, this is who I use and I have been very happy with the results. However, I am not sure if he can help in this case.

Hi All – Thanks in advance for any insight! Per a previous post, our contractor walked out on the tail end of our gut job. Lots of loose ends I won’t go into. Some of their (poor) work has resulted in damages e.g., leaks and subsequent sheetrock rot and mold amongst other issues like a broken range, damaged floors etc. Since they are entirely incommunicado we’ve had to hire another contractor to repair the urgent work and have more on the docket.
We were advised to file claims for damages on their insurance since we were additionally insureds. We contacted the carrier and were told the dates we gave were outside of the period the contractor actually had a policy with them. These dates are when we ‘discovered’ the damages but not when the work was performed that caused them. My wife and feel a little out of our element trying to navigate the claims with the carrier so are thinking of hiring an adjuster who could hopefully recoup something to offset all of the repair costs. Has anyone had experience with filing claims on a contractor’s policy and/or hired an adjuster to manage it? Thank you for any input.
P.S. As a lesson to renovators. The contractor let his insurance lapse during the renovation and we were not notified nor thought to check on it periodically. They were uninsured for approx 9 months while work was ongoing.
