How to Reinforce Joists to Create a Ground Floor Open Layout in a 5 Story Browns
If the wall is running in the direction of the width of the house it is highly unlikely that it is a support wall unless it is aligned with one of the beams that is carrying the stair opening header. If it is aligned with the stair opening beam there is a possibility it could be load bearing. Before you spend a bunch of money on sistering beams that may not be necessary it would pay to open a few probes in the ceiling at a couple of locations adjacent to the wall just to see what exactly is going on.

We would like to remove the wall between our kitchen and living room to create an open layout. The wall between the two rooms was not intended to be load bearing ,and over the past 100+ years likely has become so as the building has settled.
We are looking for a way to reinforce them without lowering the ceiling height significantly. Would sistering another 2×8 to the existing beams to the trick? Does it make sense to sister a larger size joist? Would this add more support?
