How to prevent garbage can theft?

I never put cans out on the curb either. They were stored in the small first floor addition off the back of the house.

In a matter of several weeks, one lid and one garbage can and lid were stolen from the front of my building.
I previously had secured the lid to the can by zip ties then rope but kept breaking. Other than painting my address on that cans and lid, I didn’t have any anti theft measures on them.
What methods have people used to prevent garbage can theft?
What semi permanent fasteners can I use to attach lid to can and can to building?

I drilled an eye round into the ground then secured the garbage cans with chains and a lock. I can’t wheel the cans out on garbage day but it prevents theft.

Are you near a park? After a good snow, those of us near parks see a lot of lids go to people stealing them to use as sleds.

When garbage can theft was more common than it is now I’d mark the undersides of my cans and lids “stolen from” followed by my address.

1-Paint your address in multiple places, including the inside and underside of the cans
and the backs of the lids
2-Buy cheap cans
3-Shrug off any looses

FWIW I’ve only had three or fours cans stolen in >40 years of home ownership; it’s annoying when it happens, but you can’t really stop theft of garbage cans by any practical method and there are more important things to worry about.

Lowes has 32 gallon cans on sale now for $9.98. Get 3/$30 and hopefully it will last you 10 years.

I was convinced my lids were being stolen until I realized they were blowing off in the wind, ended up down the block, underneath cars and destroyed. But have you considered taking out only trash bags to the curb and leaving the cans in your front stoop area?

LOL, chemo. The lid to my DSNY compost can went awol for about 2 weeks when the snowstorm hit. I found it the other day across the street and up the block, Yes, the lids get blown about. The cans can wander due to where the sanit guys throw them after they empty them.
