In a 3 or 4 family converted dwelling such as a brownstone, how many minutes fireproof are the apt doors supposed to be?

I saw this building code citation:

Exit doors and doors providing access to exits shall
comply with the following:
(a) Exit doors. – Doors for required exits shall be
self-closing swinging doors with a one and one-half
hour fire protection rating, except in occupancy group
J-3 buildings and except that:
(1) Exterior street floor exit doors having an exterior
separation of more than fifteen feet need not have a
fire-protection rating.
(2) Doors into stairs and exit passageways shall have
at least a three-quarter hour fire protection rating

I found the citation, but is this the correct interpretation? The apt doors for an apt should be 90 minutes?

Thanks Steve. I did ask a supplier once and didn’t walk away feeling confident that they knew anything. This is probably more in the realm of architects and engineers. But maybe your guys know something I don’t.

Get this, i only know anything about any of this from commercial. So i would not stick my neck out to answer a res question. But years ago we had work being done in a building and i told the contractor “that door is supposed to be fire rated”. He looks at it. Removes it and runs it to LIFPD. They tag the door, charge him a couple hundred for the tag, and he brings the door back. Same door, more money to call it fireproof.

Ok this is good to know. Dorkofwindsor and mozeeatupu, are you in a 3 or 4 family building? 90 minutes seems like it would be sufficient for the fire rated wall assembly per the section of code I cited and others, but it’s very helpful to get confirmation that this is what others are using.

Urbandad, I’m in a 2 fam and have three of these “knock down” doors in the interior, including the utility room. They were done by a previous owner’s reno. They are rather heavy and unsightly. For a rental front door though I think pretty standard like what you would see in a prewar condo etc. They are literally everywhere, cheap and take 10 minutes to install.

Thanks. In 90 minute doors, you can get a mineral core wood door, but more than 90 it would be only metal doors like yours. Unfortunately, I doesn’t help me much because the fire door requirements are different for 1 and 2 fams vs 3+.

I’m in a 5 family building and the door label I showed is for one of the units, not the front building door.
