Ever hire a contractor for your parents/kids/out-of-town relatives? How’d it go?

I’m working on a project for homeowners and looking for some input. Ever hire a contractor to do home repairs for someone else in your life — elderly parents or grandparents, adult children who are new homeowners, out-of-town relatives, etc.? Paper-Trails are huge. I have done this for my Managers and their relatives and essentially you become a Middle-Man. When someone is of little knowledge, it is easy to seemlessly manipulate them in a way to make it easier for yourself (the contractor) but when a trail of documents follows behind that becomes nearly impossible without issues. Also allows you to follow much easier as well with no second hand information.
It can get extremely convoluted because they are the owners, not yourself, they make the ultimate decision. I have made enough suggestions verbally that got overlooked only to be chastised for not suggesting them later on that I learned to write everything in an email.
