DEP Bill wrong?

Does anyone have experience with their water bill being wrong? My bill this month was astronomically high. It has gotten that high in the summer when I was watering grass 3x a day, but this was October! I did a few things outdoors with the hose, but nothing like summer time use. Could it be wrong? Do I have a way to figure this out?

About 50/mo for water and sewer in a 2-family occupied as one with 4 occupants.
I had another house in the past that I left for 5 days with the toilet half stuck on… water bill that month was >$1000

We actually had a running toilet in our tenants apartment and it blew up my bill x4. You can fill a complaint and ask for ‘forgiveness’ I am in in that process now, so we’ll see what happens.

just a note: we used to get a DEP bill quarterly, but now get a monthly bill, which I prefer. Interesting to hear that some still pay quarterly. No idea why we were switched. It just happened.

Wow, took a look a the usage reports, and it’s helpful. Thanks to those who suggested that. I’m confused by the bill amounts above. nf85, when you say 250/cycle, do you mean per month? And Cate, when you say three months, do you mean that you are billed quarterly, or are you adding three months together to get that amount? I pay each month, and the bills have ranged from $80-150 per month. Is that high, average, low? Just curious.

We are a family of 5 with frequent visitors and new, efficient appliances. I do a number of loads of laundry 2x a week, and run the dw once daily. We have a very small terrace with an irrigation system. Our water bill is around $250 a cycle but once it was $900 and while I drove myself crazy with speculation, I never did find out why.

Thanks everyone. I do have a DEP account online, and I’ll set up the leak alert, that’s a good idea. Also, we have tenants, and they have a washer/dryer. We also have a washer. The weird thing is that it’s been typical amount most non-summer months, and it jumped so much this month. I’ll keep looking for a reason- but there are no running toilets, I did check that. Just out of curiosity, how much do other people pay per month for water with a two family house with 6 people, and a washer dryer or two?

You can check your meter against the numbers on the bill. You can also set up an online account with DEP. It is easy to do once you have your account number and add a username and password.
