anyone can diy anything. whether it is legal or safe to do so depends on other factors not limited to the diyers experience.

i am capable of doing this work but this past spring i hired someone to do some pointing here and fix the steps. if it is a smallish job, DIY might be ok.

for the brownstoners on here who hire people to do this work on real brownstone steps, a little more detail will help them help you. they will want to know size and scope. are you talking about cracked brownstone or bricks ?

i did watch a guy reface some damage stucco on some steps at a building i worked at – he power hammered metal lath up and the threw a couple coats of mortar on, a scratch coat and then a finish coat. it was a 8×4 area and it was something a DIY could do.

OP, I’ve never tried it myself but we’ve hired people to repair our concrete steps. First we hired someone to fill the cracks and they used the wrong thing (or so they said) and the cracks persisted. Later a licensed contractor was repairing a step and filled the cracks at the same time (clearly with the right stuff) and there were no more cracks but still the leaks persisted (and of course you could see the repair because it’s never the same color, but that was OK). More recently, a mason replaced two steps, filled/repointed the cracks and brick on the sides and Thoroughcoated the top of the stoop as well as under the stoop. No more leaks and everything looks very nice. Filling the cracks and applying Thoroughcoat was about $2,000, if memory serves. They applied it very neatly and also power washed. Another option — this is what you do with brownstone steps — would be to remove the top 1-inch layer of stone/stucco and recoat with brownstone stucco (the same thing the use to repair brownstone facades). It is much more time consuming, messy and expensive.
