@Mint72 That’s what I was saying as well. Finding a few posts and mixing them in with railing is a great way to go if that is an option. If you’re trying to recreate the original look with multiple posts, that approach may not be feasible.

We are redoing our facade and would like to also replace the thin railing on our front steps with newel posts and rails that match the original. I assume we need to find someone to fabricate this. Probably in aluminum. Anyone already been through this and have tips? Any recs on companies? Thanks in advance

Aluminum? You’re looking for cast iron. I’d recommend checking out some architectural salvage shops as well — you may find that you don’t need a fabricator, just an ironworker to come install in-situ.

Yeah we had some companies come by and at least two recommended aluminum if they have to fabricate it. I saw on brownstoner someone had recommended aluminum too if we have them made – one noted it doesn’t rust like iron. I had assumed iron initially also. We were going to look at salvage yards but we have to match our originals because our home is in historic district. Wasn’t sure if we could fine two newel posts etc to closely match the original. What salvage shops do you recommend?

Do they paint the aluminum black? I’ve never heard of using aluminum (unless you mean the off the shelf modern aluminum rails you see all over Sunset Park). There are many cast iron fabricators in Brooklyn whose speciality is casting these railings from historical examples. Search the Forum for their names.

Yes they paint it black. These are fabricators who do both iron and aluminum. Not off the shelf. I’ve looked on the forum for recs but some of the ones I found are from old convos and it looks like the companies are not even around.

You may wish to visit iron salvage yard at 9th street entrance to Lowes 2nd St that have many original posts. Then have iron guy like Piccolo Iron restore and install which I did. He made new rails as part of restoration.

Sorry I actually meant Piscopo is going to be expensive. Piccolo should be fine. I think I went with AJ for something and Lopoppolo for another.The latter made me wait ages.

Everyone here loves to recommend Lowe’s salvage yard. It’s a waste of time. How can anyone match a post exactly unless you make a silicone mold and then take it there to see if it’s the same size. Maybe it could work if you find a full set but anyone who does that without a good eye is going to end up with something that looks off.

The salvage yard is a mess and hard to find anything. If you’re nostalgic for an old flea market ambiance, by all means go but I don’t think it’s worthwhile for most siutations.
