The property is on Waverly and built in 1914 and was well documented the last time it was for sale.

I photographed many of the carriage houses nearby in my struggle with Landmarks regarding gates and wood finish rather than paint and have been to the municipal archive which doesn’t document this building.

I have a early-20th century carriage house to be renovated but I have no proof of what the original doors were. I have gone through municipal archives and there is no photo record. The current door (a roll-up garage door) is not original but there is a metal track along the floor for what I assume was there previously. I am looking for examples of landmarks-approved carriage / garage doors that may fit a building of this age. early 20th century could have moved to stile and rail and panels. i have a pair here which i plan on installing on my garage. but i suspect the type you had in that area came in a little before say 1920, so look back to the 19th century:

when i go to places on long island, the old estates such as planting fields or say marshall fields estate (this may be later) and the hollins estate (1880) which i grew up behind, i looked at the doors. i can tell you this: they often had structural elements made up of outer stiles and rails – often pretty heavy wood – with up and down strips of wood, like 1.75″ wide strips running the full height in one unjoined piece (where panels would be on a modern door). and they had a cross brace running at an angle. if they were hinged (and i think yours will roll), the angled cross member ran from near the top at the hinge side to the bottom of the lock side, if they had a lock. these were often bolted inside and people entered through a small door in the door or from another door. some of these had windows up top in small er panes.

google 19th century carriage house doors. try googling barns at places like Bayard Cutting Aboretum (the old carriage house, not the 20th century dairy barn), Marshall Field Estate, Planting Fields, and even look at the doors on the old stables here in the city, such as in Central Park. The carriage house/garage is still standing at Edison’s estate in New Jersey. i have not googled this now so i am not sure what results they will return and some doors may have been replaced with the modern, post 1920 stile, rail, and panel door.

if you look at the doors on the utility buildings of the 19th century estates, you will return results more in line with the period you are looking for but also more in taste for gentry (as opposed to looking at doors from old barns for dairly operations – except perhaps the operation at marshall fields estate as that was a gentlemen’s farm; also, the horse barns at the field estate still stand – apart from the dairy operation)

if you can get a copy of this book, long out of print, Building Doors & Entry Ways by Craig Weis, he has several examples of these doors, photographed as he is actually making them.

If you snap photos or find tax photos of a number of carriage house doors from nearby buildings of the same age, you can probably do something similar with LPC approval.
