Can it Really Cost $1,800 to Jet Clean a Main Sewer Line?

Clean out guy came by and snaked main line from p-trap to sewer, and p-trap to back of house, through main 4” pipe.

He found NO blockage.

He says it’s strictly a volume of water thing, and the last three years there’s been MORE INTENSE rainfall.. the runoff has increased to a point where the main lines simply can’t cope.

Exactly what many on his boards have pointed out.

He suggested a pump, but before I do that, I’m gonna hook up my three-way fixture to the downspout to divert half of the roof runoff from the down spout into the backyard.

Seems to me that the last time I had my main drain cleaned– with the rotating head thingy– it was about $350.

My neighbor says she had a Water-Jet Power-Clean about 2 years ago and it was $1,800.

Seems pricy… Anyone have info on this?

I have been using electric sewer and drain service for all my drain blockages in the last year. It is worth asking them. They are out of the Bronx but come to Brooklyn for me. I believe they generally service all boroughs

A Snake and a Jet are extremely different. For context, a standard Snake is about a $1,200.00 investment for a Mechanic while a Jet could cost up to $90,000 for some (plus building it into the truck since a trailer is dangerous in NYC)
Also remember there is a difference between a Drain Cleaning only company and a Plumbing Company. Plumbing Companies hold Licenses and have a lot higher overhead so the cost is usually higher.
$1,800 for a Drain Cleaning only company is a bit high, but it is a solid deal for a Plumbing Company

Would a cleaning like this help with flies? Both our under stoop drain and our backyard drain attract a ton of flies, and I’ve been told be neighbors it’s because of organic material / gunk down the drains. I’ve tried pouring in eco-friendly cleaners, but no improvement. Maybe this power cleaning would do the trick?

Umanish, have you tried baking soda with a bit of vinegar, letting it rest a bit then pouring lots boiling water down the drain, then repeating?

So I had the plumber in and asked lots of questions.

His feeling was that power-jetting works well on commercial buildings where there is lots of grease build-up and other kitchen type waste blockages.

He suggests that for a homes straight, 50 foot main sewer line with a couple of clean outs along the way… a “regular” rotary clean out will work fine.
