I used to enjoy the exercise of writing a few paragraphs seasonally about various Brooklyn homes’ mechanical systems (plumbing, heating, hot water, gas, etc) that Jon Butler would use as content but that’s gone. Thank you so much @no-permitz, this makes sense and is really helpful. We can start running Links on the home page immediately — it’s easy to do — it’s not about clicks, more about a change in how our software works and also the design of the site. We are already working on a plan to post more but shorter posts but it’s going to take some time to implement. Re afternoon links, per workisfun, it used to be a roundup of local neighborhood blogs and there are so few left now, sadly.

I think that shorter (not short short) and more frequent posts would encourage the “regulars” to come back more often during the day, maybe it would help engage new regulars too. I have to say, some of the posts these days are a little long to read during the day when theres lots of other work/life distractions.
Daily links used to be under a picture. You could click through to the link without having to go through another b’stoner page to get there (I guess you guys wanted more clicks). Seeing the titles of the links was better IMO.
If I remember correctly, there was at least one post an hour, something every half hour – or something like that. It kept me coming back during the day.
But I think the biggest thing is getting readers to comment – I really don’t know how to do that.

Re censorship, our only rules are no personal attacks and nothing that could be potentially libelous. In this we’re not very different from, say, the New York Times. Some questions for you: With or without reader comments, what are your feelings about the old style of posting — for example, many very short posts — and sometimes with little reported information, perhaps just a picture and the question “what is going on here”? Are these helpful or interesting? Would you like to see more posts a day, shorter posts, very short posts, less reported information, more voice, more construction updates? As for Daily Links not being what they used to be, could you please elaborate? Also, could you please elaborate on what you mean by “timed posts” and how they keep you coming back? Thank you!

Chemosphere, we are very open to more modest renovations and have a few coming up shot by the homeowners or our staff. Professionals involved in the higher end renovations tend to photograph them more. It’s more challenging to find the lower end renovations and to find ones with photos, but we welcome them.

Cate, sorry for the delayed response – but here are my feelings and thoughts.
I miss the days things were things were not so vanilla, comments and posts were not heavily censored, ads/advertisers/money/clicks were not the priority, and when we discussed goings on whether it be sales listings, an eyesore on a block or a new restaurant. There were some real characters on this site – they either lost interest with the changes here, or we’re banned – like I was under a different handle. I think the site needs more ground level reporting, and more freedom, plus the daily links are not what they used to be. For a while I enjoyed the timed posts – it kept me coming back often.

Yes, that was nice! But even so, we are talking about a renovation around the 6 figure mark, and there are still many people doing much more modest ones.
As far as I have seen, Brownstoner has never featured a reno of a semi-detached 1920s tapestry brick style house, of which there are many thousands in neighborhoods like Windsor Terrace, Kensington, East Flatbush, Borough Park, and Midwood. Challenging reno because often the kitchen placements don’t lend themselves to being opened up, or are far from the living spaces, so people have to be really creative.
There are also the “Fred Trump Bungalow”-style houses, common in those same areas, which often have garages on the bottom. These are really Brooklyn’s and Queens’s mid-century houses, but you don’t see people going gaga over renovating them like they do for LA MCM houses.

One thing that is happening now is people who are more design savvy and online are buying and renovating houses in places like East Flatbush, Midwood, Woodside or Ridgewood. Some of these housing types haven’t been explored much on Brownstoner – the very modest semi-attached 1920s Dutch Colonials for example. They are sometimes included in the open houses but not so much in the history articles. But they are great looking houses with interesting possibilities.

It would be fun to see a feature on how lot sizes, alleyways, natural resources, and building codes have shaped the typical rowhouse shapes and styles in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Baltimore, Amsterdam, or London, vs. Brooklyn.
In terms of comparisons of floor plans: 5 ways to carve up an owner’s duplex, with both floor plans and pictures of well-executed examples. 5 ways to carve up a 20×50 brownstone floor-through apt. 5 ways to locate a parlor floor kitchen.
The recent powder room thread was illustrative of the need for this, and I realize it can be difficult to sort through various examples when some people put floorplans online, some people don’t, some are more detailed than others, etc.
When I was renovating I made bookmarks of real estate listings for similar houses with various floorplans.
Insider is great and I would suggest making floorplans available for each and every example posted – it really helps to visualize what was done!

Things I’d like to see: Price breakdowns for renovations. Houses under $1m. Apts under $250k. House renovations under $100k. Apts renos under $25k. DIY renovations without contractors. More focus on more modest outer borough housing types like tapestry brick semindetached and less on grand brownstones. Comparison of brooklyn rowhouses with other cities and other countries.
