I second Lurker’s rec for a Velux solar powered skylight. It’s a game changer! l ordered one with white, milk glass instead of standard clear glass, and think it’s well worth the extra lead time and cost.

Hi –

I was on the top floor landing of my house yesterday and discovered (unsurprisingly) that it was extremely hot. There’s a crank-operated casement window which opens out, with an interior screen. Any thoughts on a good way to vent the air? I’ve been looking at whole-house fans, but wondering if there are alternatives.

That’s going to cause a different set of problems in winter. Consider insulating your walls. That actually will help both in summer and winter.

The top floor is still going to get hot in the summer even if the walls were insulated.

The way to vent this is to open that window and open something at the bottom to allow air to come in.

We have the same situation here and we have ac on the first floor and ac units in the bedrooms and leave the bathroom window open but the heat in the hallway does not leave because the bottom of the house is closed up. If you are willing to open a window downstsirs, the heat will leave. You don’t need a hole house fan.

The problem is, and this may be ops issue, unless one has central air, all the hot air rises to the top floor where the staicase is. Insulation will not keep this heat out – he comes from other places and rises and it eventually passes through insulated surfaces. We are surrounded on both sides and still have the issue.

Right, because insulation will only slow the transfer. Without ventilation or refrigeration it will still rise to the top of the stairs. Add all the insulation you want and the heat will still appear.

Sometimes we open every door and window in the house and put fans int the stairwells pointing toward the attic, and it really helps — especially if it’s cooler outside than inside, obviously. But even when we can only open windows and a few interior doors on one level, a fan in the stairwell still helps. Need a biggish one that you can tilt slightly to blow the air upstairs.

bill & doors, you’re both right, no need to argue (you, too, Cate, but that’s not the point). Adding insulation will reduce the overall heat gain (and loss), but will not prevent the hotter air from collecting on the top floor. The most effective method of venting that air will be to open up the windows on the top floor. If you have an operable skylight, even better. Open the skylight and then open the parlor floor windows on whichever side of the house is coolest. The hot air will rise, pulling up the colder air. I say the parlor floor windows and not the second or third floors because the bigger temperature difference will create more suction and more air movement.

If op can open something at the top and open windows below, the hot air will rise out the top. We open our bathroom window here, which is at the top of the stairs, but because we have ac on the first floor and will not open a window on the first floor, the heat hangs there.

Without a fan or cooling op has to rely on something called “stack effect” and/or the idea that heat will rise.

if you have ac on on the first floor, it pushes all of the heat up into the small space at the top of the stairs and as you move hot air into a smaller space, it makes the air even hotter (its like it multiplies as the space the heat is being forced into gets smaller).

we suffer this in this house and it is horrible at the top of the stairs. houses with central air do not have this problem.

op, if i change my skylight, i am putting one in that opens so at night i can let the hot air out.

I guess if you have a mini split system with units only in the main rooms, you might have this issue of intense heat in uncooled spots, such as the top of the stairs — unless you take care to make sure the cool air is vented into every nook and cranny throughout a house? Do people cool unused attic space also?

People do not cool unused attic. What they do is insulate the wall/ceiling between the attic and the living space. They do not insulate the roof per se as it can lead to condensation issues.

Most home i have worked in have a mini split at the top of the stairs. If they have such a system.

It is possible that if someone has a big ac unit on the first floor, perhaps a cieling fan at the top of the stairs would push some of that hot air down to be recycled with the cool air. I would not do it here. I would rather just cool the first floor and suffer the hallway than have the added expense.

@squarepie would you mind sharing a photo of how the screen works with your skylight? We have a similar one and I haven’t been able to figure out how to add a screen to it and still be able to access the crank. Our glass plates rotate around a central horizontal rod so would push against a screen on both the inside or outside. Does the screen just go over the whole square opening at the bottom of the skylight with a small hold for the crank arm?
