Basement Support Columns
I don’t know exactly what you’re doing, but I’d say 10k is in the ballpark for something like this. Obviously it can vary a lot. That doesn’t include engineering, which might run 3-5k if you want to do it by the book. If you’re permitting, just get the plans done and bid it out. If you’re not pulling permits, I’d definitely pick a contractor who has a lot of structural experience. But another thing, even if not pulling permits, consider maybe having an engineer do drawings. With the drawings you might find that the columns don’t need to be as big, or the footings as deep, or the design as complicated as the contractor recommended therefore saving you money. And if the engineer recommended something more robust than the contractor, well…

I need to replace the current Basement Support Columns and Footings in my brownstone. Has anyone done this recently? What should I look for in a contractor? What is a general cost estimate (stone is 20 x 40 and it needs all columns redone)? Who do you recommend? Any assistance is appreciated.

Try Shamin Ahamed: 347-219-7909 or s.ahamed29@yahoo.com. Tell him Roz recommended him. Every cellar is different. Condition will impact cost most. Shamin is experienced and honest and will provide a fair estimate. You may also need to consult a structural engineer.

Tirado Ironworks (917) 450-7634 ask for Julio. They do this kind of work all the time and are reasonably priced.
